Looking Back - The Incident that got me really thinking about Disability.
The most memorable experience of my life was the incident that happened a Decade ago.
May 23, 2023. by Lamin Suwareh.
One beautiful afternoon, my mother brought surprising news that would shape the course of my day. She informed me that my uncle from Gunjur, a town in South Gambia, had called and requested my participation in the upcoming national polio immunization days. He had initially registered his son for the vaccination, but due to an important examination, he needed someone to take his place. Being unemployed and not currently attending school, I saw this as an opportunity to contribute and make a difference. Without hesitation, I packed my bag and made my way to my uncle's house in Gunjur, where I spent the night.

The following morning, filled with enthusiasm, I woke up early, took a refreshing bath, and made my way to the Gunjur Health Center
to attend the workshop for the polio immunization campaign. As the morning progressed, the workshop began, led by the organizers and
experienced nurses. They passionately educated us on the vital steps involved in administering the polio vaccine to children and
stressed the importance of maintaining accurate records. As we absorbed the knowledge, a profound sense of purpose and responsibility
grew within me.
Following the workshop, the participants were divided into pairs for the four days of vaccination ahead. I was paired with a lady who
appeared to be slightly older than me. Initially, We exchanged pleasantries, hoping to form a productive and efficient team. However, her demeanor
drastically changed when she discovered that I was deaf. Abruptly, she left my side and hurried into the hospital, where she engaged
in a conversation with a staff member she knew. I sensed something was amiss.
Moments later, the staff member approached me, attempting to find me another partner. To my dismay, every participant, particularly
the boys, rejected the idea of pairing with me. The room filled with whispers and murmurs, and I became the subject of ridicule.
Insensitive speculations circulated, suggesting that I had joined the campaign solely for monetary gain. It was a deeply hurtful
experience, and the weight of their judgment began to take its toll. After a brief discussion among the staff and participants,
it was decided that I should be disqualified and sent home. I handed back the t-shirt given to me to wear during the vaccination periods,
but I was told to take it.

Amidst the brouhaha and the disdainful gazes, I summoned my inner strength and refused to let their negativity define me. I stood tall, determined to accept whatever outcome awaited me. Despite the emotional turmoil, I reminded myself that I had embarked on this journey to make a difference, to contribute to society. Even though the incident was disheartening, it wouldn't deter me from my commitment to help others.
With a heavy heart, I left the hospital campus, walking away from the hurtful remarks and derogatory comments. Each step I took felt like a testament to my resilience. My legs, which I feared would falter under the weight of disappointment, remained steadfast. If I had known the humiliation and rejection that awaited me, perhaps I would have hesitated before accepting my uncle's request. But in that moment, I was determined to rise above the prejudice and prove my worth. As a person with disability, I became the talk of the day, with almost every tom, dick and harry having something to say about me. However, leaving behind the negativity that surrounded me, I walked about two hundred meters back home without looking back.
Looking Back!
Imagine yourself a Decade ago just like me...
Where did you live?
How was it there?
Where do you work?
What were your dreams?
What were your struggles?
Step into that time and become that person for a moment. From that place, now look forward.
What do you think of your life now?
One of three things will be true:
- Life is better now.
- Life is the same now.
- Life is worse now.
Which is true for you? Hold that thought. Hold that emotion.
Reaching Home!
Upon reaching home, I found my uncle waiting for me. He explained that he had been called to the hospital, which resulted in him leaving
work early. He urged me not to dwell on the incident, reminding me that obstacles were bound to arise but should never define my journey.
His words of encouragement resonated within me, providing solace and reassurance.
However, my aunt's reaction differed from my uncle's understanding. Fueled by anger, she placed the blame squarely on the staff and
my fellow participants. She argued that I should have been allowed to participate by force, standing up for my rights. Though her
passionate defense touched me, I knew that dwelling on blame wouldn't change the situation. That evening, I bid farewell to my
uncle's family and returned home.
That evening, I sought solace and understanding from my mother, who had already been informed about the events of the day. She responded to my plight
with even more words of encouragement, assuring me that this experience would only make me stronger. Her response was filled with love and unwavering support.
She showered me with words of encouragement, reminding
me of my inherent strength and the power of perseverance. Her belief in me acted as a balm for my wounded spirit. Her encouragement fueled my
determination to persist and never lose hope. This incident became a defining moment in my life, reaffirming my determination never to give up,
even for a second. I hold onto the belief that I will continue to persevere, guided by faith, and overcome any challenges that come my way.
This challenging day at the polio immunization campaign became a defining moment in my life. It tested my resilience, but it also ignited a
fire within me. The incident served as a reminder of the harsh realities some people face due to ignorance and prejudice. It motivated me to
be an advocate for inclusivity and to challenge societal norms that limit opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
It strengthened my resolve to never give up, regardless of the obstacles I encountered. As I reflect on that disheartening day, I find comfort in
knowing that Inn Shaa Allah, I will continue to face life's challenges with courage and perseverance. The incident may have been a setback, but
it will never overshadow my determination to make a positive impact in the world.
Looking Forward!
Now, as I reflect on my life, I realize that it has taken a positive trajectory. I have grown as an individual, embracing the values of empathy,
understanding, and perseverance. I have found meaningful work that allows me to contribute to the betterment of society. My dreams have begun to
take shape, and my struggles have shaped me into a stronger person.
While challenges still arise, I face them with unwavering determination and resilience. I understand that life is a journey, and setbacks are merely
stepping stones to growth and self-discovery. Looking ahead, I am filled with optimism, grateful for the progress I have made, and excited about the
future that lies before me.
Inn Shaa Allah, I will continue to navigate life's challenges, driven by the desire to create positive change and overcome adversity.
This experience at the polio immunization campaign serves as a constant reminder that no matter the obstacles I face, I will never give up.
